about
Written by 5 young students based in Philadelphia, PA and Nashville TN after the tragic shooting of Breonna Taylor. The students took a moment to write a poem describing their thoughts on the state of the country, and this song is what came out.
lyrics
I gotta breathe in
I gotta exhale
It’s so hard to prevail
I’m so tired of trying and crying
Our children slowly dying
tears been falling down our eyes
Trying to get things right
PreChorus:
I’m so numb
I’ve had enough
It ain’t fair
Protesting don’t get us anywhere
And you don’t hear
Our cry for help
And we’re left here to help ourselves
L:
Light , a element so bright
Light , a beam that shines through the night
Now what happens when that light gets taken away
We cry our tears begging them to take the pain
Almost walking dead , wondering if we are the next bullet
March 13th will be engraved in our minds
Breonna Taylor… , her light WILL ARISE
RA:
Notecards on her wall
This was going to be her year
Did they choose this life because they knew that they would be the spark of the revolution? Did they come into this life, sacrificing themselves for the sake of the black community?
What was it like for her best friend, her first kiss, her mom, to hear the name they know so well throughout the world. Her childhood friends who heard her name in the car rider line,,,her name isn't something personal anymore.
I gotta breathe in
I gotta exhale
It’s so hard to prevail
I’m so tired of trying and crying
Our children slowly dying
tears been falling down our eyes
Trying to get things right
PreChorus:
I’m so numb
I’ve had enough
It ain’t fair
Protesting don’t get us anywhere
And you don’t hear
Our cry for help
And we’re left here to help ourselves
AD:
Peace in her memory for Breonna’s legacy
Give us integrity because we’re not your enemy
She helped saved lives when she was alive
Her goal is in our minds and in our hearts she will thrive
SN:
This is absurd
That everything has to be a blur
I don’t get why we have to strive
For a chance to survive
This world is crazy. I get that, I know
But that is no excuse to make bullets blow
Never again will i want children to die
So please, people hear our cry
What side are you on now people, what side are you on?
